SImPatIE

Participation in the SImPatIE-project

SImPatIE stands for Safety Improvement for Patients In Europe and was a European funded project aided by a grant by DG Health & Consumer Protection. The project started in February 2005 and lasted two years.

The objective of the project was to use Europe-wide networks of organizations, experts, professionals and other stakeholders to establish a common European set of vocabulary, indicators, internal and external instruments for improvement of safety in health care.

The project was divided into eight so-called work packages (WPs) that all aimed for more specific objectives. WP4 was led by the Office for Quality Indicators. The objectives of WP4 was to establish:
a vocabulary (set of definitions) related to patient safety, considering language, health care system organization and economy and cultural issues across Europe
a set of indicators / outcome measures that can be used in efforts to improve patient safety both at the system and organization level.

An expert group with European representatives of project partners, stakeholders and external experts was established for the achievement of the objectives of WP4. The work package delivered:
  • A set of definitions of terms related to patient safety and a framework to illustrate the core terms of the vocabulary.
